Florida has issed out new style validation stickers for: Boats, Cars, Trailers & more ever since the year 2000. In the first few years of the new stickers issuance not many were issued out since many tag agencies did not have the new machines to make the stickers. In time more agencies received the equipment to eventually phase out the old style separate month year stickers. Serial numbers were not added till about 2002. Click Here to see a comprehensive guide to Florida stickers. This page is to help see the different parts of the new stickers as well as the different types. Additional supporting information from Buddy Harris and Karl Denhart. See below for photos and information.

  1. Florida used numeric county codes on its license plates between 1938 and 1977, with the order of the codes based on the populations of each of the state's 67 counties according to a 1935 census. There was also code 68 on plates ordered from the state tag office in Tallahassee, and code 90 on replacement plates.
  2. Only one type of license plate for FMP vehicles was known to be issued so far, and used for at least 30 years. A standard 6'x12' embossed steel plate in the dark blue over lemon yellow color scheme used on 1961 regular Florida license plates. The state name is embossed in upper case font and centered between the top mounting holes.
  3. I cannot tell the difference between a zero and the letter O on a license plate, unless you consider the plate’s sequence. And with personalized plates, one has no knowledge if it is an O.

Here, 3M’s default license plate font has gotten poor marks for legibility from law enforcement in some states. For an example, see plate collector David Nicholson’s capsule report of Indiana’s switch to digital plates in 2004 (near the bottom of the page). 3M’s digital plate system the dominant one in use.

Is it possible you've been a victim of fraud and deception without knowing it? It's now time to check your newly issued Florida specialty license plates for something missing. It has been confirmed that sellers (both ALPCA and non-ALPCA) are selling new Florida specialty license plates with defaced trailer plates posing as passenger plates. This bulletin is focused on exposing a defaced trailer sticker from a untampered passenger sticker.

How are the vandals defacing the stickers? These sellers are using chemicals to rub the classification off of the validation sticker, leaving a blank where it should say the classification to which it is registered to, in most cases TRAILER plates posing as passenger plates or non-classified plates (which don't exist on current stickers). Sellers have been selling the defaced stickered plates as passenger plates or on an 'As-Is' basis. A normal validation sticker should always have a classification above the tag number. It was confirmed by a tag agency supervisor that all stickers must have a classification and agencies around the state of Florida have never issued any current validation stickers without classification. Some of the known tags to be defaced are: End Breast Cancer, Protect Our Reefs, United We Stand, Protect Florida Whales, Golf Capital of The World & Red Cross plates.

Below is a side by side comparison of what a defaced sticker would look like next to a nondefaced sticker.

  • If you need to surrender your license plate to the State of Florida, there are a few methods of surrender that can work for you.

Walk it into the right place.

In my opinion, the most effective method of surrender is to turn it into the Local Tax Collectors office in your county. You just walk the plate and registration into the office and the clerk will give you a receipt showing the date the Florida License plate was surrendered.

The following is a link to the Florida Department of Revenue’s website showing all of the Tax Collector’s websites in the state: http://floridarevenue.com/dor/property/taxcollectors.html or click here to visit.

If you need this proof of surrender to cancel an insurance policy, you’ll have the proof available right away. Provide this proof of plate surrender to your insurance agent who will be able to create an Insurance cancellation request that you can then sign to complete the process.

Mail your vehicle license plate to the State of Florida.

If your auto insurance company doesn’t require proof of surrender in order to cancel your auto insurance, you are welcome to mail your plate, a letter explaining that you’ll be surrendering your plate and a copy of your registration to the following address:

    Division of Motorist Services
    2900 Apalachee Pkwy
    Mail Stop 98
    Tallahassee, FL 32399

*If you don’t have the registration, please explain that on the letter that you send along with the plate giving whoever opens the package instructions for what you need done, ie. “Please surrender this license plate and cancel the registration.”

My advice is to send the the plate “Certified” with a return receipt so you can be sure that the correct department received your license plate in a timely manner. In this case, you’ll want to keep the proof or a scan of the return receipt for 7 years, in case anything arises.

Unfortunately, even if you paid the $225 plate fee and surrender the plate the next day, you are not entitled to receive the $225 plate fee back.

Why Do I need to surrender my Florida License Plate?

Lets say you sell your car and no longer have a need for auto insurance. The only way you can actually cancel an auto insurance policy in Florida, with intent, is to surrender your license plate from your vehicle back to the State of Florida to avoid the potential threat of your driver’s license being suspended.

If you have a license plate in the state of Florida that went on an automobile, truck, or even a golf cart, you are required to carry Florida Personal Injury Protection.

This requirement is enforced through Driver’s License suspensions. How this works is when your insurance suspends, cancels or expires, the State of Florida gets electronic notice from the insurance company. The State will give you a maximum of 30 days from the cancel date to either surrender the plate or buy new coverage. If neither happens within that 30 days, the department of motor services who handle your Driving privilege will issue a pending suspension of your license.

Florida charges a lot of money to fix your license after a suspension for having no insurance, not to mention the potential hazard of driving without insurance coverage. The only way the state of Florida can gauge how many vehicles are on the road and insured is to link the VINs on the insurance directly to the license plate.
