Causes of Word's Spell Check Not Working. There are several reasons Word's spelling and grammar-checking tool might not be working. A simple setting might have been changed, or the language settings may be off. Exceptions may have been placed on the document or the spell-check tool, or the Word template may have an issue. Spell check is an advanced feature and it is not included in the WordPad. Spell checking is a function of word processing programs and not text editors. WordPad is a text-editing program and not a word-processing program. Word marks spelling, grammar, and stylistic issues with an underline. Spell check in Microsoft Word, FrontPage, and Outlook users
All versions of Microsoft Word can spell check a document. To spell check a document, follow the steps below.
- Open Microsoft Word, FrontPage, or Outlook, and the document or file you want to edit.
- Press the F7 key.

- Open Microsoft Word, FrontPage, or Outlook, and the document you want to edit.
- Click Tools
- Click Spelling and Grammar
Following the above steps start a spell check on the document you're viewing. Each found spelling error gives options to changed the word to one of the available suggestions. If the word is spelled correctly, Ignore the word. If the word is misspelled and you believe that this spelling error is made throughout your document, Change All. Or, if you want to change the word to an alternate spelling, click one of the suggestions from the suggestion list and click Change.
NoteNew versions of Microsoft products also automatically underline any misspelled word in a red squiggly underline, similar to what is shown in the picture. To correct these misspelled words, right-click the word and choose the properly spelled word.
Microsoft Notepad and WordPad
Microsoft Notepad and Microsoft WordPad do not have any spell check solution. To spell check a document written in either of these programs, use an online solution or open it in another program like Microsoft Word.
Corel WordPerfect
All versions of Corel WordPerfect can spell check a document. To spell check a document, follow the steps below.
- Open Corel WordPerfect and the document you want to edit.
- Press Ctrl+F1.

If the text editor you're using is not listed above, try searching the program's online documentation for a spell check solution. You can open the online help for almost any program by pressing the F1 key. If searching the online help finds nothing relating to 'spell check,' the program may not offer that function.
